There are 3 classes of membership:

1. Wholesale
Manufacturers, importers and/or distributors of music products

2. Retail
Retailers of music products, that supply directly to the public or the end-user

If you're not sure which of the above categories best describes your business, the key factor is that the principal activity of your business will determine the class approved. In other words, if the majority of your revenue comes from  selling musical instruments to the general public, then you are a retailer. If the majority of your revenue comes from selling music products to retailers, then you are wholesaler.

3. Associate
Businesses or individuals whose activities are seen to relate to the music products industry but which fall neither into the above wholesale or retail classes. Associate members include piano tuners, private music studios, software developers and other active music bodies, such as TOAN or ABODA.

Industry statistics
Each year the AMA reviews the import statistics for music products and produces a comprehensive analysis widely used in the industry for business planning. The AMA now has a body of data going back to 1995. The AMA has also worked extensively with the Australian Bureau of Statistics to ensure more accurate product dissections making the data more reliable.

The data is reported against a calendar year, enabling it to be easily compared with international markets.

This report is available exclusively to AMA members.

Soft copy of the annual reports are posted in the Members section of this website.

Research into the relationship between music and the brain
There is a wealth of research data showing the positive correlation between active music making and brain development in children and young people, and between active music making, and health and wellbeing in adults and young people. The AMA keeps an active watch for new research and can provide relevant information on request.

Market research
The AMA commissions or participates in unique research into music in Australia. There are two reports:
  • Australian Attitudes to Music - a national research project investigating who plays an instrument, what they play, when and how they learned, why they gave up (if they have) and also delves into a range of attitudes towards active music making.  Due to be repeated in April 2006.
  • The Stevens Report - a joint project with The Australia Council, the Music Council of Australia and ASME, to survey music in Australia's classrooms.

The reports are posted in the Members  section.

Australian Music Trade News
The AMA publishes a monthly e-newsletter called Australian Music Trades News to help keep members informed about activities and up to date with industry news. Back copies are stored in the Members section.
